About the day – an introduction from Andrew Thomas

How do we help work in the therapy room transfer into the everyday lives of our clients, and remain useful, long after the session has ended?

This practical, experiential workshop introduces the latest development of the Rainbow Map and the tools and concepts that have grown around it over the seven years since it was publicly introduced through an article in the BACP’s Therapy Today magazine (click here to read that and other articles on the Rainbow Map, and to see examples of how it might be used). At its core, the tools and concepts will help you integrate your client’s reflective and reactive brain and body into practice, enabling you to work more explicitly with their whole system.

This is the Rainbow Map. It is a sheet of paper divided into columns with the colours of the rainbow blending into one-another horizontally, one below the other. The columns are for recording emotions, thoughts, sensations and behaviours, placed higher or lower on the sheet, depending on the strength/type of arousal, indicated by the colour of the band as well as the written prompts at the side of the sheet the level of triggering

After that article, in the following two years, I trained more than 700 psychotherapists and counsellors in its use before returning my focus to clinical practice and ongoing research and development. The questions, challenges and adaptations that came from those therapists, alongside my own continued use of the Rainbow Map with individuals and couples, significantly deepened the way I understand and use it today.

During the day, I will share that learning and demonstrate how the Rainbow Map can be integrated into practice. We will look at how it can help clients develop more differentiated awareness of their emotions, thoughts, sensations and behaviours, and how that awareness can then be used to generate practical resources that clients can test, refine and increasingly use for themselves outside the therapy room.

I will also introduce newer tools and concepts that have developed from this work, including ways of helping clients notice recurring patterns and make better use of their reflective capacity when their reactions become increasingly automatic.

The workshop is designed for both individual and couple therapists and will be practical and experiential throughout. The aim is that you leave with tools you can begin using in your day-to-day work with clients, and perhaps even in your own life.

A central theme of the day will be how we help clients take what they learn in therapy into their relationships, work, family life and everyday situations.
