About the day

Music and Imagery examples (reproduced with permission)

This experiential workshop offers counsellors and psychotherapists an introduction to the philosophy and principles of Supportive Music and Imagery (SMI), a resource-oriented therapeutic method that combines carefully selected music, imagery, creative expression, and reflective dialogue to strengthen inner resources and support emotional wellbeing, resilience, and personal growth.

Designed as an introductory CPD experience rather than a clinical skills training, the workshop invites participants to experience SMI from the participant perspective, exploring its underlying philosophy and how music, imagery, and creativity can foster reflection, inner resources, and professional wellbeing.

Participants will be introduced to the philosophy underpinning Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), Music & Imagery Therapy, and SMI, before taking part in reflective and experiential activities that illustrate some of the principles of the approach.

The workshop will include:

  • An accessible introduction to GIM, Music & Imagery Therapy, and SMI
  • A clinical case illustration demonstrating resource-oriented practice
  • A guided reflective music-listening experience focused on professional wellbeing and self-care
  • An experiential introduction to SMI from the participant perspective
  • Opportunities for creative reflection, discussion, and integration
  • Consideration of ethical boundaries, reflective practice, and pathways for further learning

Throughout the day, participants will be invited to experience music not simply as something we listen to, but as a medium for reflection, emotional resilience, authenticity, and connection with ourselves and others. By balancing theory with experiential learning, the workshop offers a restorative space in which participants can deepen their understanding of Music & Imagery methods while reconnecting with the inner resources that sustain their own professional practice.

No prior musical or artistic experience is required.

(Please note, this is an introductory workshop will not prepare or qualify participants to facilitate SMI with clients)
