COURSE CONTENT & OUTLINE
Part 1: This covers the history and development of EMDR, the Adaptive Information Processing Theory which underpins the practice of EMDR and current research and theory about the neuropsychological basis of EMDR. Participants will learn and practise how to use the 8 Phase Basic Protocol and how to develop case conceptualisation and treatment planning for their clients. Participants will practise the protocol using their own material.
Client selection and preparation are also covered. Following this 3 day training, clinicians can start to work using EMDR.
Part 2: This supervision and integration day is an opportunity to consolidate the protocol; to clarify any questions you have about EMDR therapy and about the material covered so far in the course; and to review and consult on cases you have started working with.
Part 3: The focus of Part 3 is using EMDR to work with more complex cases. Additional techniques for more advanced working with blocks and resistance will be covered. It will cover how to work with dissociation and specific strategies that can be applied. You will learn how to work with childhood sexual abuse and, in addition special protocols for working with grief, addictions, and other clinical presentations including anxiety disorders, phobias and pain will be introduced. There will be group supervisions and further practice sessions with participant material.
Participants MUST attend for the whole day for the full 7 days in order to receive the Certificate of Attendance. If participants miss any part of the course, they will need to arrange to attend an alternative training to complete the course. Participants need to complete part 1 before progressing to part 2 and then to part 3.
Supervision
As an integral part of this 7 day training, you will complete 10 hours of the 20 hours supervision required to seek accreditation as an EMDR therapist. Following Part 1, participants are expected to start using EMDR in their clinical practice. Some participants may have access to additional supervision through their workplace. Some may choose to access supervision with EMDR Accredited Consultants during the training, depending on their individual circumstances. Participants will be directed to supervision provided by EMDR UK Accredited Consultants.
The course is the basic EMDR Training, following which applicants can pursue accreditation through supervision to become EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioners. Details of this will be given at the end of the course. Information is also available on the EMDR UK Association website www.emdrassociation.org.uk
The EMDR South Central Regional Group supports EMDR therapists in Dorset, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Somerset and runs local CPD events and opportunities for networking http://emdrsouthcentral.org.uk/
Further CPD is available through national and international events and conferences, including many online events.
Those who are working with more complex clients are particularly encouraged to further their knowledge and expertise following the training. The EMDR UK Association advertises a programme of CPD Training held throughout the UK, including many online events. While in training, membership to the Association is free of charge; membership is also free for the first year for NHS staff and for members of the regional groups and you will be given information about this on the training.
EMDR with children
Basic techniques for children are covered in this 7 day full basic training. For those who work with children, following the basic training, there is a specialist child training in two parts delivered by specialist Child Trainers. It is strongly recommended that those working specifically with children further their knowledge and expertise by completing Parts 1 & 2 of the Child Training. More details about this can be found on the EMDR UK Association website.

Manuals with copies of powerpoint presentations will be provided for each part of the course. There will also be copies of relevant handouts for use with clients. These will be provided electronically post-training.
